Week's Summary
This week we were assigned to start creating our Course Outline that we will develop throughout the Ed 308 course. This weeks focus was on the analysis process. We had to choose a topic we would want to cover, determine how long the course will last, and whether or not the course was blended, hybrid, or online.
Item of Interest
The course I am designing is an introduction course in which I am teaching students how to play the guitar. There are no prerequisites for this course. Any level of undergraduate student can take it. I thought a good way to get information about the students prior guitar knowledge was for them to take this survey I made for them (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1CVfEP-ykhrNHhgWnG8atu-AriR--jpMMQTKT1bdYDqg/viewform). The questions asked will help me understand why the students chose to take this course. It will also help me decide which chords need to be taught first in order for the students to be able to play the song they chose.
Problem or Concern
My concern right now is about my topic. I don't know if this is something that can be taught in an online course. Right now I am currently teaching myself how to play the guitar by using the internet so I though this topic would be fun and interesting. I just need some opinions on whether or not you think this is a good enough topic I can make a course outline for the Ed 308 assignment. If you think it is a good topic why? or why not?
Anna,
ReplyDeleteI think this would be a good topic for your course outline assignment as long as you know enough about it to teach it. I personally chose something that I am familiar with.
I really really like this idea! I think it is awesome that you went outside the box with your topic. I chose something completely safe and went with my content area. I am actually really eager to see how you make this work, but I know you can do it. I have a friend who taught himself guitar using only youtube videos so I know having a course where you get consistent, knowledgeable instruction would be an effect form of learning this skill. I think the use of videos and teaching students to read tabs quickly would really help to make for effective instruction. Good luck!
